Abstract

Menstrual personal hygiene is an important component of maintaining reproductive health among adolescent girls. Inadequate knowledge and inappropriate personal hygiene practices during menstruation may increase the risk of health problems and poor sanitation. This study aimed to analyze the effectiveness of menstrual personal hygiene education through the GIRLS SAN-SANITATION Program on menstrual personal hygiene knowledge and practices among adolescent girls at Fajar Harapan Orphanage, Pekanbaru. This study employed a quantitative approach using a quasi-experimental design with a one-group pretest-posttest design. The study sample consisted of 100 adolescent girls who participated in all stages of the study. The intervention was delivered through interactive education covering menstruation, genital hygiene, sanitary pad use and replacement, hand hygiene, underwear hygiene, and the proper disposal of used sanitary pads. Data were collected using questionnaires administered before and after the intervention and were analyzed using univariate and bivariate analyses with an appropriate paired statistical test based on data distribution. The results showed an increase in the achievement of menstrual personal hygiene knowledge and practices from 57% at the pretest to 91% at the posttest, representing an increase of 34 percentage points. The statistical analysis showed a p-value of 0.018 (p < 0.05), indicating a statistically significant difference between the scores before and after the educational intervention. Menstrual personal hygiene education through the GIRLS SAN-SANITATION Program has the potential to serve as a promotive and preventive approach to improving menstrual personal hygiene knowledge and practices among adolescent girls in an orphanage setting.
