Abstract

This study aims to analyse the effect of an educational intervention on improving knowledge of patient safety culture among inpatient healthcare staff at Dr Tadjuddin Chalid General Hospital, Makassar. The study employed a quantitative method using a pre-experimental, single-group, pre-test–post-test design. The sample comprised 105 healthcare staff selected using consecutive sampling. Data were collected using a knowledge questionnaire and analysed using the Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test at a 95% confidence level. The results showed that before the intervention, 79 respondents (75.2%) were in the ‘good’ knowledge category, 13 respondents (12.4%) were in the ‘adequate’ knowledge category, and 13 respondents (12.4%) were in the ‘poor’ knowledge category. Following the educational intervention, the number in the ‘good’ knowledge category increased to 99 (94.3%), whilst those in the ‘adequate’ and ‘poor’ categories each numbered 3 (2.9%). The results of the Wilcoxon test showed a p-value of 0.000 (p < 0.05), indicating a significant increase in knowledge following the educational intervention. It was concluded that the educational intervention had a significant effect on improving knowledge of patient safety culture amongst inpatient healthcare staff. Therefore, continuing education needs to be integrated into healthcare staff competency development programmes to strengthen patient safety culture and improve the quality of hospital care.
